William Liu is a young student from Brooklyn whose story has just caused a stir in the Big Apple. It all starts when he returns from a concert quite late, using the G line of the New York subway, which runs twenty-four hours a day. Head in the air, he then forgets his wallet on the spot before getting out of transport but unfortunately does not notice it soon enough.

On the contrary, the unlucky one does not notice it until around 1 p.m. the next day, that is to say almost half a day after the fact. Then follows an incredible treasure hunt, which will lead him and his girlfriend to geolocate the object thanks to an AirTag placed inside. This relatively compact chip can indeed be inserted into certain small spaces, without having to dismantle it to do so.

Thank you Bluetooth!

Quickly, Liu realizes that his wallet does not seem to move. Conversely, he is even completely immobile and the Locate application on his iPhone confirms this: his identified position corresponds to the Church Avenue station, the terminus of the G line installed in the Kensington district. Very promptly, our victim then goes to the given address, praying that the AirTag does not start moving lest he be hidden in a train.

Finally, more fear than harm: the wallet had in fact been deposited in an office, at the door of which the student had only to knock to see it handed over by an employee. In a blog post, Liu also says that she would have been particularly surprised by Apple's geolocation technology: proof that not everyone is aware of it yet, and that risky behavior could become common. in the coming months.
